Subject: 2012 Telephone Book Recycling Program — Final Report
Summary
The 2012 Telephone Book Recycling Program was conducted from Monday,
November 19, 2012 to Friday, December 21, 2012. However, since some containers
remained locked behind school gates, the last few bins were picked up on January 7,
2013. Staff is providing the Board of Directors with a final report on the results of the
program.
Staff Recommendation
Staff recommends the Board of Directors to approve the awards in the amount of
$7,000 as detailed in Attachment "A."
Analysis
On October 16, 2012, the Operations Committee recommended staff to waive the one -
half book per student requirement in order to encourage schools, especially high
schools, to participate and still receive the minimum $300 award. The waiver was
contingent upon the schools making a good faith effort to collect outdated telephone
books. Program invitations were sent to 30 schools but only 22 decided to participate.
However, out of the 22 that participated, the following schools collected less than eight
(8) telephone books so they will not be receiving the minimum $300 award: Killybrooke
School, Wilson and Back Bay High School.
The grand prize award of $400 will be given to both Estancia High School and Kline
School for collecting the most telephone books per student. In addition, $500 will be
given to Kline School for collecting between 10 -20 pounds per student. Unfortunately,
no school achieved the $800 award for collecting over 20 pounds per student. Below

Upon approval of the Board, awards totaling $7,000 will be prepared and check
presentation dates will be scheduled.
Strategic Plan Element & Goal
This item complies the with objective and strategy of Strategic Element 2.0, Solid
Waste, which states:
"Objective: Our objective is to manage the collection and recycling of residential trash
in the most economical and environmentally friendly way."
"Strategy: We will do this by looking for ways to improve efficiencies, achieve high
customer satisfaction, and considering prudent new recycling methods. "
Legal Review
Not applicable at this time.
Financial Review
The District budgeted $14,500 for the telephone recycling program and adequate
funds are available.
Public Notice Process
Copies of this report are on file and will be included with the complete agenda packet
for the January 24, 2013 Board of Directors meeting at District Headquarters and
posted on the District's website.
