08 - OC Goodwill Costa Mesa Sanitary District …an Independent Special District Protecting our community’s health and the environmen t by providing solid waste and sewer collection services. www.cmsdca.gov Memorandum To: Operations Committee Via: Scott Carroll, General Manager From: Javier Ochiqui , Management Analyst Date: October 16, 2012 Subject: OC Goodwill Summary Last year, t he Costa Mesa Sanitary District (CMSD ) took an interest in supporting and/or partnering with OC Goodwill on donated goods such as clothes, furniture, appliances, etc. The intent was to divert items from going to the landfills. Staff contacted Mr. Doug Wooley, the Community Relations Director of Goodwill of Orange County. Below is a brief report provided by Mr. Wooley summarizing the items collected: Goodwill of Orange County Total donations for 2011 = 1,026,019 Year to date donations for 2012 = 760,051 City of Costa Mesa Costa Mesa Store donations for 2011 = 51,208 Costa Mesa Store year to date donations 2012 = 39,928 Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT) as of May 2011 = 90,828 lbs. YTD = 88,182 lbs. Staff Recommendation That the Operations Committee recommends the following to the Board of Directors: 1. Continue to support OC Goodwil l in an effort to reduce and reuse items 2. Continue to measure donations and terms of tons collected versus number of items 3. Direct staff to partner up with OC Goodwill in order to have a community event to collect items Strategic Plan Element & Goal This it em complies the with objective and strategy of Strategic Element 2.0, Solid Waste, which states: “Objective: Our objective is to manage the collection and recycling of residential trash in the most economical and environmentally friendly way.” “Strategy : We will do this by looking for ways to improve efficiencies, achieve high customer satisfaction, and considering prudent new recycling methods.” Legal Review Not applicable at this time.
