MINUTES OF RECYCLING COMMITTEE MEETING
SEPTEMBER 3, 2003
The Costa Mesa Sanitary District Recycling Committee met at 9:00 a.m. in
conference room 1A at the Civic Center, 77 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa.
Directors Present: Dan Worthington, Greg Woodside
Staff Present: Rob Flamers, Tom Fauth, Joan Revak, Bobby Young
Director Worthington called the meeting to order at 9:00 a. m.
• STRATEGIC PLANNING 2003 - PUBLIC OUTREACH — CLASSROOM
RECYCLING PROJECTS
Director Worthington reported he is awaiting a determination on classroom
presentations from the Newport-Mesa Unified School District ( NMUSD). It is
anticipated the program will begin in September and presentations will be made
to NMUSD 6th grade classrooms. Staff is formulating a flyer promoting the
school program.
COSTAMAZING— DISTRICT PARTICIPATION
Director Worthington is in the process of obtaining further information on the
age of the Pepper Trees at Sepulveda Park to be used for the peppercorn
memorabilia for the CostaMazing event on February 7, 2004.
LARGE ITEM COLLECTION PROGRAM - 2003
• Ms. Revak presented the final report for the 2003 Large Item Collection. Costa
Mesa Disposal reported a total of 509.71 tons of large items collected and taken
to the landfill at a cost of $11,205.00. The District received a credit for 307.62

tons of white goods recycled in the amount of $4,462.81 resulting in a net
program cost of $6,742.19. Ms. Revak presented a historical perspective on the
tonnage and cost factors for the past 6 years that indicated white goods
collection up by 214% over last year with the landfill tonnage is about the same.
The program continues to be very successful, generating many appreciative
phone calls from the community.
MINI TELEPHONE BOOK RECYCLING PROGRAM - 2003
Mr. Revak informed the Committee that the Mini - Telephone Book Recycling
Program is continuing and will run through September 19, 2003. Collection bins
are located in front of City Hall and at the Orange Coast College Recycling
Center. To date, 900 books have been collected in the bins. Last year's mini -
program yielded 2,825 books (5.65 tons).
BIODIESEL FUEL FOR TRASH HAULING TRUCKS
Mr. Fauth provided information on a quote from another supplier of Biodiesel .
fuel, and presented an article on Biodiesel costs across the United States.
