Minutes - Recycling - 2001-11-061 �S�SANIT�A` y a P V ! y • �04POeA���, COSTA MESA SANITARY DISTRICT MINUTES OF RECYCLING COMMITTEE MEETING NOVEMBER 6, 2001 The Costa Mesa Sanitary District Recycling Committee met at 9:30 a.m. in conference room 1A at the Civic Center, 77 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa. Directors Present: Dan Worthington, Greg Woodside Staff Present: Rob Hamers, Tom Fauth, Joan Revak, Dawn Schmeisser STANDARDIZED CONTAINER PROGRAM DISTRIBUTION PROGRESS REPORT • Mr. Fauth provided a matrix on the status of container orders to Roto Industries and reported as of August 31, 2001, containers have been ordered and invoiced as follows: 6,900 90 gallon $358,110.00 14,400 60 gallon $646,560.00 425 35 gallon $ 16,893.75 21,725 Total 1,021,563.75 PUBLIC RELATIONS CAMPAIGN Ms. Revak presented an advertisement, 'We're % Way Home" to be published in the City of Costa Mesa Recreation Review winter edition along with the `Trash Collection Worker Strike" ad. Ms. Revak reported the ads are being published as public service announcements at no cost to the District. The publication will be released on December 19, 2001. PRESS RELEASE Mr. Fauth presented a press release announcing the delivery of Route 20 standardized containers to take place in the month of November. • +�b�bLN�t.I *�G �Pau».a� MARKING ON CONTAINERS Costa Mesa Sanitary District Minutes of Recycling Committee Meeting November 6, 2001 Page 2 Mr. Fauth reported local cities were contacted by staff to determine if they encounter problems with graffiti on their standardized containers and how they deal with removal of such. It was learned that approximately 40 percent of the cities /districts polled do not have a graffiti problem. The solution in some cases is to paint over the graffiti; other entities replace the cans. The container manufacturer, Roto Industries, suggested a flat green enamel paint manufactured by Sherwin Williams, costing $7.35 per can. Mr. Hamers suggested obtaining a can for testing on the containers. The Committee will recommend the Board direct staff to obtain the spray paint for testing purposes TELEPHONE BOOK RECYCLING PROGRAM • Ms. Revak reported the 2001 School Telephone Book Recycling Program is underway and will run to December 14, 2001. Flyers and posters were delivered to the participating schools, Costa Mesa Fire Stations and Orange Coast College Recycling Center. A CD and VHS tape of the District's "Working For You" educational tool was also provided to each of the schools to enlighten students and faculty on the many services provided by the District. Ms. Revak presented a list of participating schools showing their designated use of award. Ms. Revak reported on investigating a suggestion of Director Worthington to obtain a videotape depicting the recycling of telephone books into new products as an additional educational tool for the schools. Ms. Revak learned such a tape, produced by Daishowa, does exist and PacBell is obtaining the video for use by the District. USED TIRE ROUNDUP — OCTOBER 13, 2001 Mr. Fauth Reported on the recent tire collection event apprising the Committee that 370 used tires (4.88 tons) were hauled away by the Orange Coast Conservation Corps (OCCC). A large portion of the tires originated from the maintenance shop at the Corporation Yard. Additional and advance publicity is recommended for the next tire event to elicit greater participation. • N • ��SANITjR t �Sa �ORro.An�• Costa Mesa Sanitary District Minutes of Recycling Committee Meeting November 6, 2001 Page 3 GREASE PREVENTION PRODUCTS AND E -WASTE Director Worthington advised he had not yet had the opportunity to test the Japanese grease prevention products, but will have a report at the December Recycling Committee meeting. Ms. Revak reported a CRT Summit will be hosted by the County of Orange Integrated Waste Management Department on November 15, 2001. Director Worthington and Ms. Revak plan to attend.
