Subject: O C Goodwill Community Event
Summary
T he Costa Mesa Sanitary District (CMSD), Orange Coast College (OCC), and OC
Goodwill will work together to coordinate the community’s first used item recycling
event . The purpose of the event is to provide residents with an easy and convenient
method for recycling unwanted clothes, furniture , E -waste, and other items.
In addition to reducing waste that goes to the landfills, it will provide an opportunity for
the Children’s Center’s Science, Tech nology, Engineering, and Mathematic (STEM)
Program to generate funding for their program. For each full container that the OC
Goodwill collects, they will donate $75.00 towards the STEM P rogram which is
designated for children of OCC students . Staff is in forming the Board of Directors
about the event details.
Staff Recommendation
That the Board of Directors provide staff with feedback regarding the OC Goodwill
Community E vent scheduled for Saturday, October 26, 2013 , from 9 :00 a.m. to 3 :00
p.m. at OCC P arking L ot C.
Analysis
The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 26, 2013 , from 9 :00 a.m. to 3 :00 p.m.
OC Goodwill will be providing the labor for the event and t he Children’s Center will
provide additional volunteers if needed. Staff contacted M icha el Carey from Orange
Coast College (OCC). He stated that OCC will host the event and allow us to use
P arking L ot C (Attachment 1 ), in addition t hey will be providing boxed lunches and
water for th ose working the event. The OC Waste & Recycling will be don ating two

FREE tickets to the Discovery Scie nce Center to every vehicle that makes a donation
during the event . The event provides a safe and free service to the community, where
OC Goodwill will be able to collect clothing, furniture, and electronics. P ap er shredding
will also be available on site and staff will help dispose of old files and documents for
the public . Shredding is a reliable way to safely and properly dispos e of documents
containing personal information.
Strategic Plan Element & Goal
This item complies with the objective and strategy of Strategic Element 2.0, Solid
Waste, which states:
“Objective: Our objective is to manage the collection and recycling of residential trash
in the most economical and environmentally friendly way.”
“Strate gy : We will do this by looking for ways to improve efficiencies, achieve high
customer satisfaction, and considering prudent new recycling methods.”
Legal Review
Not applicable at this time .
Financial Review
Since staff did not anticipate this event, th ere are no funds available in the FY 2013 -
2014 budget. The District will need approximately $2,500 to promote and advertise the
event (Attachment 2). There will be no costs to utilize the OCC P arking L ot C . OC
Goodwill will be providing the labor for the event. The refore, the general public will be
able to attend this event free of charge.
Public Notice Process
Copies of this report are on file and will be included with the complete agenda packet
for the August 20, 2013 Board of Directors Study Session a t District Headquarters and
posted on the District’s website.
