MINUTES OF RECYCLING COMMITTEE MEETING
JANUARY 10, 2005
The Costa Mesa Sanitary District Recycling Committee met at 12:00 p.m. at 628 W. 19th Street,
Costa Mesa.
Directors Present: Greg Woodside, Jim Ferryman
Staff Present: Rob Hamers, Tom Fauth, Joan Revak
Director Woodside called the meeting to order at 12:00 p.m.
STRATEGIC PLANNING 2004—PUBLIC OUTREACH-CLASSROOM RECYCLING PROJECTS
Mr. Fauth informed the Committee of recycling presentations to be scheduled at Rea
Elementary and Sonora Elementary schools. A vermi-composting presentation will be
made this afternoon at the Orange County Fairgrounds/Master Gardeners with three after-
school classes. Another is scheduled on January 13. Recycling Committee Chairman
Woodside will participate in the presentations.
TELEPHONE BOOK RECYCLING PROGRAM WITH SCHOOLS
Ms. Revak reported the 2004 School Telephone Book Recycling Program has ended and
a final report will be presented at the February 7, 2005 Recycling Committee Meeting.
CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING PROGRAM
Ms. Revak reported a special truck is picking up Christmas trees between December 27,
2004 and January 14, 2005 — adding an additional week to the annual special pick up.
Results will be tabulated and reported at the February 7, 2005 Recycling Committee
Meeting.
PUBLIC RESTROOMS
Director Ferryman passed on information on the public restrooms to Newport Mesa Unified
School District Board member Dana Black. Director Woodside will contact the Principal at
TeWinkle School.

REVIEW OF DISTRICT RECYCLING PROGRAMS
The Committee reviewed the District's Recycling Programs and their value to the
community. Programs available to residents receiving trash collection services from the
District include the summer large item collection, one-time additional large item collection
by call-in, the Christmas tree recycling program and education materials. Programs
available to all residents of Costa Mesa and Santa Ana Heights include household
hazardous waste collection, school telephone book recycling contest with monetary
awards, school recycling and magic show presentations, worm-farm composting program
for schools, used syringes recycling containers at designated pharmacies, used tire
recycling program, recycling projects for non-profit groups and copies of CMSD's 15-
minute award winning video.
Director Ferryman suggested field trips for high school students to the materials recycling
facility in Stanton.
The Committee set the following preliminary goals for 2005-2006:
Encourage Recycling Projects by Non-Profit Organizations
Establish High School Recycling Programs and Education
Utilize $500 Recycling Support from Costa Mesa Disposal
Prepare for Year 2006 Mandatory Household Battery and
Electronic Waste Recycling
Research Food Recycling
Update District's Award-Winning "Working for You" Video
Educate Residents on One Container Mixed Trash Recycling Program
Provide Tours of CR Transfer Materials Recovery Facility
Continue to Educate Students on the Importance of Recycling
