RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE COSTA MESA SANITARY
DISTRICT APPROVING THE RENAMING OF THE LARGE CONFERENCE ROOM AT
DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS TO THE JIM FERRYMAN SEWER LIFT STATION
WHEREAS, Jim Ferryman has served the Costa Mesa community as an elected
and appointed official and volunteer for more than forty years; and
WHEREAS, Ferryman was elected and served as a member of the Board of
Directors for the Costa Mesa Sanitary District (CMSD) from 1988 to 2020 where he served
as President for several terms ('94-'98, '05-'07, '12-13 and '19-20). Ferryman was part
of the CMSD Board of Directors that became the first public agency in Southern California
to approve using anaerobic digestion technology to convert green waste and food scraps
into Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) that reduced greenhouse gas emissions and
improved the environment; and
WHEREAS, Ferryman served as a member of the Board of Directors for the
Orange County Sanitation District from 1989 to 2020 where he served one term as
President (2006-2008). Under his leadership, he oversaw the completion, and
commissioning of the initial Groundwater Replenishment System, the world's largest
water purification plant, which provides safe, reliable, high quality, and locally controlled
drought proof water to residents in Orange County each year; and
WHEREAS, Ferryman was a leader in environmental protection service where he
served as Chairman of the National Water Research Institute and he served on the
Executive Board of the Santa Ana River Flood Protection Agency; and
WHEREAS, Ferryman has a long history of community involvement, serving
various organizations such as Past President of the Newport -Mesa Unified School
District, Past President of Costa Mesa -Newport Harbor Lions Club, Past President of the
Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce and the Harbor Area Girls Club. Ferryman was
chosen as the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce's "Man of the Year" in 1992; and
WHEREAS, on August 24, 2020, CMSD Board of Directors adopted Administrative
Policy No. 70.00, Naming of District Facilities; and
WHEREAS, on March 10, 2021, CMSD's Citizens Advisory Committee
unanimously recommended the Board of Directors rename the Elden Sewer Lift Station
to the Jim Ferryman Lift Station to honor his more than forty years of community
involvement and active contributions to making a positive difference in Costa Mesa; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Directors concurs in this recommendation.
NOW THEREFORE, the Board of Directors does hereby RESOLVE as follows:
1. The Board of Directors does hereby rename the Large Conference Room at
District Headquarters to the Jim Ferryman Conference Room to honor his
more than forty years of community involvement and active contributions to
making a positive difference in Costa Mesa.
2. Staff is directed to implement this change and affix such signing as is
appropriate to identify the facility accordingly.
