Minutes - Recycling - 2010-03-22r� L COSTA MESA SANITARY DISTRICT MINUTES OF RECYCLING COMMITTEE MEETING March 22, 2010 The Costa Mesa Sanitary District Recycling Committee met at 12:00 p.m. at 628 W. 19th Street, Costa Mesa. Directors. Present: Robert Ooten Staff Present: Scott Carroll, Tom Fauth, Joan Revak, Sherry Kallab, AJ Cully Others Present: Trisha Throop, Community Relations Recycling Coordinator CR &R Director Ooten called the meeting to order at 12:00 p.m. I. Recycling Committee Goals for 2009 -2010 Director Ooten requested Mr. Carroll condense the Recycling Committee Goals and incorporate them into the Strategic Plan. Mr. Fauth reminded committee about the Costa Mesa Community Fun Run during Earth Week April 23 -24, 2010. Mr. Carroll instructed staff to revise and condense the Recycling Committee Goals and report any changes at the next meeting. II. Orange County Waste and Recycling Sub - Regional Meetings, Funding and Grant Program Mr. Fauth reported the OC Waste and Recycling Committee Meeting held March 18, 2010 was attended by Jocelyn Schamber and Trisha Throop. Ms. Throop summarized the meeting. Mr. Fauth stated Mr. Patrick McNelly is no longer available to assist on the 2008 -09 Grant project due to schedule conflicts. The CMSD will utilize Ms. Francine Kaplan, Master Gardener and science teacher at Coast High School in Huntington Beach to coordinate mass presentations to educators. The recent order of 300 Earth Machines and 312 Kitchen Buckets were delivered to the City of Costa Mesa Corporate Yard on Friday, March 19, 2010. Minutes of Recycling Committee Meeting March 22, 2010 Page 2 Mr. Fauth presented emails from Mr. Izzy Donati, Newport Harbor High School student requesting a citywide ban on Styrofoam take -out containers at restaurants. This effort is aimed at reducing the Great Garbage Patch floating between San Francisco and Hawaii. Mr. Fauth requested this topic remain on the Recycling Committee Agenda for further discussion. Mr. Carroll added this subject may become part of the CMSD Strategic Plan. IV. CR &R Report on Other Agencies Recycling Programs Ms. Throop confirmed mass mailing of the CR &R brochure would take place the first week in May. Ms. Throop requested staff submit copy for new magnetic signs placed on the trash trucks to promote CMSD special programs. Per the contract agreement, these magnets can be changed on a quarterly basis. Currently, CR &R has a Christmas tree collection magnet only. Ms. Throop advised the Committee of a fieldtrip to the MRF for California Elementary School scheduled in June. V. Report on Other CMSD Recycling Programs Ms. Cully reported Rite Aid Pharmacy will discontinue the Sharps program due to corporate disapproval of the Curbside drop box in their store. The two remaining Stericycle pharmacies will transition into the Curbside program as soon as possible. Director Ooten discussed a recycling program at Hawes Elementary School in Huntington Beach that the CMSD schools might want to duplicate. Director Ooten also called attention to an OC Register article about upcycling with Truman Benedict School in San Clemente. VI. Public Comments No public present at the meeting. VII.
