In order to be selected, nominees must meet two of the criteria below to be considered: 1. Recycling Activity: Active effort demonstrated to i mplement recycling programs throughout the organization. 2. Diversion Percentage: Recycling diversion percentage through cubic yard or tonnage evaluation. (Validated through hauler service records.) 3. Waste Reduction Efforts: Demonstration of effort to buy recy cled content and/or promote waste reduction in the organization. Staff Recommendation T hat the Board of Directors present the awar ds to the nominees at the Board’s regular m eeting on October 23, 2014. Analysis As such, the District would like to recogn ize two individuals who have promoted recycling practices and successfully implemented recycling programs at their schools. Jen Haskell has coordinated the school’s Alkaline Battery Recycling Program at Christ Lutheran. Christ Lutheran won first place fo r the District’s Battery Recycling Pilot
Board of Directors October 1 4 , 201 4 Page 2 of 2 Program and they successfully collected 1,941.2 pounds of batteries. Ms. Haskell continues to promote recycling programs at the school. Djuna Gordon and Summer Kelly also coordinated the Alkaline Battery Recycling Program at Davis Magnet. Davis Magnet won second place for the District’s Battery Recycling Pilot Program and they successfully collected 1,904.6 pounds of batteries. Ms. Gordon and Ms. Kelly continue to encourage students to recycle at t he i r school. Str ategic Plan Element & Goal This item complies with the objective and strategy of Strategic Element 2.0, Solid Waste, which states: “Objective: Our objective is to manage the collection and recycling of residential trash in the most economical and environm entally friendly way.” “Strategy : We will do this by looking for ways to improve efficiencies, achieve high customer satisfaction, and considering prudent new recycling methods.” Legal Review Not applicable at this time . Environmental Review Recognizi ng persons and organizations who dedicate themselves to recycling and minimizing the waste stream is not a disturbance of the environment similar to grading or construction and is not a project under CEQA or the District’s CEQA Guidelines . The program is intended to educate students about the hazards of disposing alkaline batteries in the trash particularly because they contain toxic metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium, and nickel. Batteries that end up in landfills can have a negative e ffect on our envi ronment and food chain, potentially causing serious health risks to humans and animals. This program allows children of all ages to continue to learn about recycling and conservation efforts in school. Furthermore , Ms. Gordon has helped her school successf ully collect 1,9 04 .6 pounds of batteries. Ms. Gordon continues to promote recycling programs at the school.
