Subject: CMSD 70th Anniversary - Update
Summary
February 11, 2014 will be the District’s 70th Anniversary. In October 2013 a committee was formed that consisted of Director Perry, Director Schafer, Management Analyst Ochiqui, Management Assistant Pham, Administrative Assistant Wick and the General
Manager. The committee will be sharing with the Board proposed plans for promoting
the 70th Anniversary in the community.
Staff Recommendation
That the Board of Directors receives and files this report. Analysis The Board of Directors approved $15,000 in the FY 2013-14 Budget to promote the
District’s 70th Anniversary. The following expenditures are planned or have already
been spent promoting the anniversary.
Cover shot and editorial in Newport Mesa Magazine $4,995.00 - spent 70th Anniversary logo contest 432.00 - spent
70th Anniversary lapel pins (50 pins) 309.00 - spent
District letterhead (500) 376.38 - spent

Below is the logo that will be placed on many of the items mentioned above such as
letterhead, flags, coffee mugs/cups, shirts, signs, balloons, book covers and tote bags.
The giveaways (e.g. coffee mugs, balloons, book covers, magnets, tote bags, etc.) will
be available to the public at District booths during community events such as Concerts
in the Park, Fish Fry, Community Run and Vanguard University Sustainability
Conference. In addition to the giveaways, District staff is working with CR&R on placing 70th Anniversary banners on refuse trucks and on March 20th the District will be
a sponsor at the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce 90-Minute Breakfast Boost
where staff will be promoting the 70th Anniversary. Staff will also be coordinating with
school district officials on having “show and tell” events at elementary schools where
staff can demonstrate to school children the operations of the sewer combination truck. The “show and tell” events will be a good opportunity to distribute the “Sewer
Slayer” coloring brochure created by staff.

Not applicable.
Environmental Review Purchase of promotional items such as signs and giveaways is not a disturbance of
the environment similar to grading or construction and is not a project under CEQA or
the District’s CEQA Guidelines.
Financial Review
The Board approved $15,000 in the FY 2013-14 Budget for promoting the District’s
70th Anniversary. Expenditures will be within the budget amount.
Public Notice Process
Copies of this report are on file and will be included with the complete agenda packet
for the December 10, 2013 Board of Directors Study Session meeting at District
Headquarters and posted on the District’s website.
