COSTA MESA SANITARY DISTRICT
Minutes of the Board of Directors Special Meeting Held March 11, 1998
The Board of Directors of the Costa Mesa Sanitary District attended a meeting of the
Costa Mesa Sanitary District Recycling Committee at 9 :00 a.m. in conference room 1 -A
at the Civic Center, 77 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa.
Directors Present: Jim Ferryman, Art Perry
Staff Present: Rob Harriers, Lois Thompson, Joan Revak, Dawn Schmeisser,
Reba Coulter
Guests Present: Laura Fabrego, City Volunteer
Mr. Hamers presented a draft "letter to the Editor" addressing the disposal cost of
telephone directories delivered to the community, and the lack of accountability by the
telephone companies in preventing the recyclable material from being dumped in landfills
at taxpayer cost. The Committee will present the topic to the CMSD Board of Directors
at the March 12, 1998 regular meeting.
Ms. Thompson furnished information on the collection of. household hazardous waste
and advised the Committee that two cities in Orange County, Orange and Fountain
Valley, provide pick up services. Both cities use Curbside, Inc., a licensed hauler of
hazardous waste, and the only company offering such services to date. The cost is $125
per pick up, paid for through grant funds from Integrated Waste Management and
limited to senior citizens. Positive feedback has been received from citizens in Orange
and Fountain Valley. It was noted that a recent addendum to the District's Agreement
with Costa Mesa Disposal provides for the Contractor to furnish a household hazardous
waste residential pickup program approximately once every three years.
Mr. Harriers reported that, as requested by the Board, he and Ms. Thompson are in the
process of examining residential bin service and the research is presently in the study
phase. e
The meeting adjourned at 9:35 a.m.
No action was taken by the Board of Directors of the Costa Mesa Sanitary District.
