Minutes of the Board of Directors Special Meeting Held December 10, 1997
The Board of Directors of the Costa Mesa Sanitary District attended a meeting of the Costa Mesa
Sanitary District Recycling Committee at 9:00 a.m. in conference room 1 -A at the Civic Center,
77 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa.
Directors Present: Dan Worthington, Nate Reade
Staff Present: Rob Hamers, Lois Thompson, Joan Revak, Reba Coulter
Guests Present: Eric Dreizen; City Volunteer
Assistant Manager, Ms. Lois Thompson, gave an update on the Sharps program. A contract for
the purchase of the sharps containers and their collection was signed by the Board and forwarded
to Stericycle. Stericycle confirmed that we are the first agency in Orange County to provide this
type of program.
Staff will meet with the City of Fountain Valley regarding the administration of the two
approaches to the program within a regional application. District Counsel prepared an agreement
for the pharmacist's signature indicating their willingness to comply with the program
requirements. A status report was sent to each pharmacy advising them of the agreement and
proposed timeliness of the program. A point of sale poster was developed for each of the
pharmacy sites. The poster is generic in nature so it can be used at additional pharmacies when
grant funds become available.
Ms. Thompson presented a first draft of artwork for the Costa Mesa Disposal trucks for the
Board's review. Revisions were suggested for presentation at the Board of Directors meeting on
December 11, 1997.
Mr. Hamers reported on the Christmas Tree Recycling Program, informing the Committee that
the City received its only bid for processing the Christmas trees from the Orange County
Conservation Corps in the amount of $8,825. The chipped trees will be used as weed abatement
ground cover in Canyon Park and selected freeway sites. Both Costa Mesa Disposal and CR
Transfer were willing to step in and handle the program if necessary. Posters and flyers have been
produced and distributed to the Christmas tree lots and grocery stores in town.
The meeting adjourned at 9:50 a.m.
No action was taken by the Board of Directors of the Costa Mesa Sanitary District.
