Assistant Manager, Ms. Lois Thompson, reported on California's First Annual Second Chance
Week which is scheduled for October 18.- 26, 1997. The motto for the event 'is: Reuse, Resale
and Repair... Give it a Second Chance. Goals of the program are to increase public awareness
about reuse, resale and repair; to provide usable items for those in.need and to save landfill space.
Staff proposes to develop a press release and distribute information regarding local thrift stores
and charities accepting donations of large items at the Tire Collection Event..
Ms. Thompson reported on a program developed by the Walt Disney Company and the State of
California's Environmental Education Interagency Network (CEEIN). Jiminy Cricket's
Environmentality Challenge is a free and fun statewide program open to all California fifth grade
classes with the goal of teaching students to take action to restore, preserve and care for our
environment. The District has obtained sufficient program materials for all of the fifth grade
classrooms in Costa Mesa and will transmit to the teachers with a letter from the Board.
Director Worthington provided an update on the Sharps Program, informing the Committee that
two collections sites have been recruited, North Drugs and Steven's Pharmacy. Representatives
of both sites indicated there are approximately 10,000 residents in the City of Costa Mesa using
needles, and a Sharps Program would be a great community service. The Committee discussed
funding the program with a proposal that the Board approve $4,500 to support a pilot program
for six months. Funds would be sufficient to support two collection sites, tub exchange once
every four weeks, 1200 sharps containers, point of sale posters and printing of brochures. Staff
will pursue other avenues for funding the program.
Ms. Thompson gave an update on artwork for the Costa Mesa Disposal trucks. Orange Coast
College Advertising Art Director, Jack Wichert, was contacted, however, he was not very
encouraging as far as getting a quick response from students. It was suggested that staff contact
other schools to obtain the artwork. Southern California College was mentioned as well as the
local high schools.
Purchase of promotional products for the District was discussed. Ms. Revak provided prices
obtained on several items being considered which will be presented to the Board at the October 9,
1997 meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 10:25 a.m.
No action was taken by the Board of Directors of the Costa Mesa Sanitary District.
