Assistant Manager, Ms. Lois Thompson, reported on her attendance at a workshop in Santa
Monica on a new program to bring recycling to the attention of the public. America Recycles
Day will be November 15, 1997 and Vice President Gore is the honorary chairman. The program
includes plans to give away a house made of recycled materials plus $75,000 to purchase land.
Requirement for entering is a commitment to attend a recycling event or support recycling. It was
suggested the District participate by promoting our school telephone book recycling program.

involved in recycling.
Ms. Thompson gave an update on the proposed Sharps Disposal Program. County would like
District to use household hazardous waste grant. If District and City willing to join in regional
program and use household hazardous waste grant, District would have to write up a program to
win award and then give grant monies to County. Other cities participating in County program
would be Anaheim, Orange and Newport Beach. The deadline for submitting household
hazardous waste grants is January 1998. The Committee decided to bring Sharps program before
the Board at the September 11, 1997 Board meeting.

recommended that we approach Orange Coast College on the idea of providing artwork for use
on the trucks.
