Minutes of the Board of Directors Special Meeting Held August 13, 1997
n The Board of Directors of the Costa Mesa Sanitary District attended a meeting of the Costa Mesa
Sanitary District Recycling Committee at 9:00 a.m. in conference room 1 -A at the Civic Center,
77 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa.
Directors Present: Nate Reade, Dan Worthington
Staff Present: Rob Hamers, Lois Thompson, Joan Revak, Reba Coulter
The Board discussed the new CR Transfer brochure with ideas presented by CRT and CMSD
staff, and it was agreed that "Asphalt" and "Concrete" should be deleted from the list of items
currently being recycled from the trash as those items are on the list of items the hauler will not
pick up.
The telephone book recycling program was discussed and Ms. Thompson reported on a new
school, located behind Costa Mesa High School. The school has requested to be included in the
telephone book recycling program. Director Worthington suggested newspaper publicity for the
school program include a picture of school children pulling a wagon full of telephone books.
Tire Round -Up Day is scheduled for October 18, and publicity will be included in the newsletter.
The Orange County Conservation Corps will pick up and process the tires.
Ms. Thompson advised that the Daily Pilot has approached the District to place an ad in the 50"'
Anniversary celebration edition for Orange Coast College, on September 10 and 11. The cost of
an 1/8 page ad would be $165.00. The issue will be brought before the Board at the August 14,
1997 meeting. The Daily Pilot also requested that CMSD participate in the Catch the Spirit
special edition.
The Committee discussed medical waste disposal and recycling. Ms. Thompson reported that the
vendor, "Stericycle" has been contacted to obtain cost estimates to support the program. The
program would be implemented with two locations (preferably retail drug stores) identified as
partners in our program. The annual cost to maintain the program for each site is estimated at
$3,250, and the goal would be to obtain this level of monetary sponsorship from each of the
locations. A sponsor proposal is being drafted to present to business owners describing the
benefits realized to their firm by participating in such a program. Staff will present a list of drug
stores in the City to present to the Board at the August 14, 1997 meeting. Staff will also contact
the Daily Pilot to enlist their support to receive input from the community regarding the disposal
of sharps.
The meeting adjourned at 10 :00 a.m.
No action was taken by the Board of Directors of the Costa Mesa Sanitary District.
